Do you need another degree if you already have one?

Broaden Your Chances of Landing a Good Job

There are many different varieties of degree, and advanced degrees include master degree, doctorate, and professional degree. For vocational careers, qualifications are usually diplomas and certificates. The subject of your degree and where you studied are just as important in securing you a good job. Even if you already hold a degree, it is usually worth studying further to achieve the next qualification up. The higher you're standard of education, the less likely you are to be unemployed and the more you could earn. Although this information is generally accepted, the US Census Bureau quantified the effect in The Big Payoff: Educational Attainment and Synthetic Work-Life Earnings.

Employability

Clearly, the type of career you decide to pursue, and your college will greatly affect your earning power and employability. Any figures quoted are averaged across all colleges and disciplines. These are intended as an indication of the effects education can have. Individual circumstances may vary. In a study carried out by the Bureau of Labor Statistics , holders of a master degree showed an unemployment rate of just 1.6% compared with high school graduates at 4% unemployment.

Earnings

In the same study master degree graduates earned nearly double that of high school graduates. Higher degree holders earned even more, a staggering two and three quarter times more. Even if the academic path is not for you, there are plenty of vocational training courses that could help teach you the skills you need to succeed in life. Job satisfaction comes in many forms, and you could gain just as much satisfaction from say auto maintenance, if it is what you enjoy, as the next guy or girl who might be a judge and loves law.
