Overview

Located in the heart of New York's capital, Albany Law School is the oldest independent law school in North America. Our outstanding location offers unparalleled opportunities for law students. Albany, the home of New York's highest court, federal courts, and the state legislature, is itself a laboratory for the study of law.

Albany Law School offers J.D., LL.M., and LL.M. for International Law Graduates degrees, 14 concentrations and several joint degrees through accredited colleges and universities in the Capital Region.

A wide array of field placements, including internships through the Albany Law Clinic & Justice Center, Government Law Center, and Science and Technology Law Center, provide students essential hands-on learning.

Our graduate employment rate is 97 percent, well above the national average. Our Career Center assists students from their first day at Albany Law, just one of many reasons our students and alumni are exceptionallly successful in their careers.

The Juris Doctor (J.D.)
The Juris Doctor (J.D.) is a first-professional law degree awarded to a student who has successfully completed the study of law. Albany Law School offers three- and four-year programs leading to a J.D. degree.

The oldest independent law school in North America, Albany Law has been educating students and producing superb lawyers for more than 155 years. And as the only law school in the capital of New York State, Albany Law is uniquely positioned to offer you a kind of legal education not yet available anywhere else. Here you will find an intellectually rigorous curriculum in a highly supportive environment; a close-knit community of dedicated students; and distinguished, yet accessible faculty.

We are home to an extensive clinical program and dynamic law centers that serve the public and provide you with opportunities to engage in meaningful law practice.

Though we emphasize the value of a broad-based education, Albany Law School offers concentrations for students wishing to focus their fields of study on particular areas of interest. Albany Law School also offers Joint Degree Programs in cooperation with several local institutions.

LL.M. for International Law Graduates
This LL.M. program is designed for international law graduates who seek an academic program in order to qualify for admission to the New York State or other state bar.

Students design their own 24-credit course of study with faculty guidance. Law graduates from civil-law countries are required to participate in orientation and must begin the program in August. Although students may elect to concentrate in one area of law, they must take at least two course in subjects that are tested on the bar exam.

Candidates who are not required to participate in the fall orientation may apply for admission in January or May. Applicants with international law degrees from civil-law countries are admitted in August only.
