What is Computer Animation?

Animation is a production method of making a moving picture using a number of slight variations of still images in a sequence. When the film is viewed, the eye does not separate out these images but instead sees continuous movement. Animation is most commonly seen in cartoons, but movies such as the original Godzilla also used animation principles by varying the posture of models between shots. Plus, animation has also been popularized by movies from Shrek to The Matrix.

Three dimensional (3-D) and digital film technology (rather than old-fashioned celluloid film) have increased the speed that images can be produced and edited. You can look to work in a niche area of animation, concentrating in background effects, producing realistic body movements, and other areas that help make animation come to life. As animation technology revolutionizes daily activities, computer animation has become more prevalent and is used in feature films, desktop graphics, mobile phones, gaming, and even in car entertainment units. What Subjects Do I Need to Study in School?

Clearly, an art education is important, but computing and design classes are also extremely useful. You should look for classes in computer graphics, interactive media, digital media, special effects animation, motion graphics, and 3-D modeling. Other things that you might study include:

  • basic film and video production
  • 3-D media
  • drawing for animation
  • sound for animation
  • animation storyboard

What Animation and Computer Animation Degrees Are Available?

You can earn a certificate at the very basic level, but associate's, bachelor's, or master's degrees are also available in animation. You may be interested in taking a broad reaching program and then refining your specialist subject at a later date.

What Type of Entry Level Jobs Are Available?
