Filmmaking - Film and Video

What is filmmaking?

Filmmaking involves a number of processes and different groups of people to make and distribute a film. The same process is used whether it is a multimillion dollar Hollywood blockbuster or a low budget short film using the minimum of staff on the minimum of pay.

What filmmaking programs are available?

There are different types of film ranging from government information through international blockbusters. The stages involved in bringing a story to life are generally the same; it is only a matter of scale. Most schools offer programs in film and video production, although some concentrate more on digital technology aspects of filmmaking. You might be interested in a certificate or an associate's, or bachelor's degree.

What subjects do I need to study In school?

You will need to have an artistic streak for tasks such as picture composition and camera angles. Since you will be working with many different teams, the ability to get on with people at all levels is crucial. Being able to manage, problem-solve, and delegate are also important. Communication, management skills, and a good grasp of written and spoken English are also vital.

What will I learn?

Development is the first part of a five part process in filmmaking. This is where the initial story or synopsis is fleshed out into steps, moods and characters are developed, and the screenplay is written. The next step is preproduction involving the creation of a production team including a sound director, director of photography, production manager, choreographer, art director, and location manager among others. At this point the film is storyboarded.

Production is the third step in the whole process, and involves filming scenes in sequences while actors and crew not directly involved with a particular shot will rehearse their scenes. Post production is where the film editor arranges and links up scenes and shots with sound and special effects to create the final film. The film is then distributed, advertised, and marketed.

What type of entry level jobs are available?

Competition within filmmaking is fierce. You will likely gain experience as a junior in small companies involved with educational or promotional films before moving onto bigger projects.
