Media Production

What is media production?

Media production is concerned with the design and production of digital media including television, film, radio, and Web sites. A lot of behind-the-scenes work is needed to get a show or performance up to the level where it can be broadcast. This might include adjusting camera angles, sound balance, credits, or special effects. Media production is about getting all of these components in the right order and of the right magnitude, color, or position.

What media production programs are available?

There are a number of different programs that you could take before embarking on your career in media production. Because media can be a broad subject, most programs tend to focus on one type of media. If you want to get into the motion picture industry or training films, then qualifications in film and video production can be studied either as a short program ending in a certificate or as a much longer course resulting in a bachelor's degree. Even programs in digital photography or web design offer a degree of media production education. It is all a question of how much emphasis on media production you are looking for.

What subjects do I need to study in school?

First and foremost, you will need to be computer literate to be able to cope with editing software. A good eye for color and presentation is essential, so classes in design or art would be a good idea. You will be dealing with lots of different people so communication and management skills are needed. While management studies is rarely an option at school, maybe being involved with a society, charity, or student group would help prove you have what it takes.

The emphasis of different programs varies. Typically you might study:

  • Digital imaging, including stills, dynamic, and 3D images.
  • Video production covering studio practice sessions and post-production techniques.
  • Audio and radio production and broadcasting.
  • 3D modeling and kinematics - merging with live action scenes.
  • Multimedia animation production, including Internet and 3D animation.
  • Video technology, both high definition and digital formats.
  • Television production.

What type of entry level jobs are available?

You may find junior roles within broadcasting companies such as television or radio. Internet/multimedia also provides a rich hunting round, or you might venture into commerce, entertainment, current affairs, or education.
