What Is Multimedia?

There are many different types of media that are used to communicate ideas, images, and sound, and multimedia looks at the way that these media interact, how they differ, and how they can be combined. Multimedia encompasses Web sites, broadcasting (television, radio, Web casts) video, MP3s, DVDs, CDs, memory sticks, photography, and film.

What multimedia programs are available?

There are many different programs to choose from, whether you are interested in broadcasting, film and television, the Internet and Web site design, visual communications , video game art, telecommunications, or media production. Most degrees can be studied at the associate or bachelor's degree level, although there are a few programs that award a certificate or diploma. There are even fastback and online programs in some cases, particularly useful if you already work or cannot travel to college on a regular basis. Many online offerings are combined with Web casts, tutorials, and course work. There can be a short residential component (usually one or two weeks) allowing you to practice your skills and to meet other students. Unfortunately, virtual reality cannot yet provide a studio experience!

Subjects to study in school

Good subjects to study might include a creative art such as fine art, ceramic design, or technical drawing. Computer proficiency is essential as you will likely be exposed to different varieties of editing software. Your communication skills are vital, so English would be useful. It might help your future career to have spent time on a student committee or with a charity organization honing your communication and interpersonal skills.

Each college program will be slightly different since this is a new and growing area. Typically, you might study digital media technology, multimedia, Internet applications, digital video editing, digital imaging, audio production, and digital media contextual studies. There is usually broad opportunity to practice your newly learned skills and creativity.

What type of entry level jobs are available?

You might be interested in following a career in broadcasting, television, Web design, video and film production, music industry, gaming, live performance hosting, exhibitions, education, or even advertising. Entry level roles will most times be under the supervision of a senior coworker until you have honed your editing and production skills. After this initial period, you might receive small projects and be part of a much larger team.
