Television Production

What is television production about?

While you may see the finished product of a television program that maybe lasts half an hour, many hours of production time will have gone into it to ensure a quality product of dramatic or informative content, sound, and visual quality. Television production is about making sure that components of a broadcast are in the right order, that sound levels are uniform and correct, and that the best footage is used.

What television production programs are available?

Television production is an extremely specialized area. Some colleges offer an associate's degree in applied science for television production.

What subjects do I need to study in school?

Television production is a good example of professional multitasking. You will be working as part of a team, but you will also need to offer leadership and direction. Your communication and problem solving skills need to be excellent with an ability to absorb new information quickly. Some of the work is quite technical, although you will also need a creative streak with an eye for aesthetics. Suitable subjects to study in school might include math, English, computing, art, and maybe physics. Experience in teamwork and organizational skills would also be a bonus whether you play on a sports team or lead a debating society.

Technology changes rapidly, so any technology-based program can quickly change as well. You might study theory and operation of television and video production equipment and facilities in addition to television production planning and organization, including concept development, program design, project documentation, and team management. You might also cover advertising, design and illustration, electrical engineering, video production, journalism, multimedia, graphic design, and dramatic arts.

What type of entry level jobs are available?

You might find work on a local cable channel as a junior or production assistant. The number of cable channels has multiplied dramatically in recent years, so there should be plenty of opportunity in game shows and shopping channels. Once you have gained experience, you might move away from entertainment and pursue a career in current affairs or national television, or shift directions and work in advertising.
