Labor Studies

Labor studies is an interdisciplinary field that deals with work, the workplace, and workers and their organizations. Labor studies draws from disciplines such as history, economics, industrial relations, political science, law, sociology, communications, and philosophy and how they relate to work related issues. If this is something that interests you, you may want to consider earning a degree in labor studies.

A labor studies degree involves the study of these different disciplines and how they relate to such issues as the role of work in contemporary society, the development of trade unions, the changing relationships between family and work, worker's rights, racial and gender inequality in the workplace, issues of health and safety at work, and the efforts of working people to achieve justice and equality in the workplace.

Curriculum in a labor studies degree program includes writing courses, computer courses, and the study of American labor history, labor laws, grievance representation, grievance arbitration, issues in collective bargaining, and contemporary labor problems. You will also take courses in more general areas such areas as economics, history, sociology, law, and politics. A labor studies degree program will also include a curriculum that involves the study of both past and present examples of work and unionism so that you will gain a better understanding of the labor movement and its relationship to the economy, politics, and society as a whole.

In a labor studies degree program you will also learn skills that you can apply in your own workplace, in a union, and in the community. These skills will enable you to learn new jobs, and to take on new responsibilities in the work force. As a graduate of a labor studies degree program you will be able to serve more effectively as a member or leader of a worker's union, or labor organization.
