Types of Culinary Schools

Here you will find the different Types of culinary schools available. It is a general description to be used only as as a basic guideline. This should give you an idea of the possibilities you face when selecting a culinary school. What Types of Culinary Institutes are available?

There is a variety of culinary schools that you could enroll at. The type you choose all depends on what sort of culinary education you want, the role you want to be trained for, and of course how much you can afford to invest in terms of time and money. As a general rule, the more time and money you invest now, the less time you will spend in semi skilled or poorly paid kitchen work. You could gain your culinary education from a number of different sources.

Culinary colleges and culinary schools

Schools which only teach the culinary arts to the exclusion of all other subjects. You will be immersed in an environment of other chefs, cooks, and gastronomes. Examples include: California Culinary Academy and Florida Culinary Institute

Vocational schools

These offer a variety of programs designed to train you for a specific career. You may want to train as a chef, but you might be in an environment where you also meet students studying to be plumbers, carpenters, nurses or technicians. You may prefer to be in such a mixed environment during your social time. Examples include: Sullivan University

Traditional colleges and universities

Traditional colleges or universities offer a major or minor in culinary arts and may or may not be able to award degrees. These types of culinary education tend to have a more academic slant rather than a career oriented one.

Evening Classes

Designed more for the hobbyist or person who may want a short introduction to a particular style of cooking before embarking on a more intensive culinary education. These courses are useful for gaining an insight into the subject rather than education you for a specific career.

Online and Distance Learning

These programs are the perfect choice for working culinary professionals who have an associate's degree in culinary arts and the motivation to succeed in an online environment as well for busy profesionals who need a more flexible schedule and want to study at home.
