The healthcare industry is big and expensive. For most of us, membership to the healthcare industry comes through a health insurance plan. In exchange for our monthly health insurance premium, we can receive the benefits of America's state of the art health care system. Our health insurance companies pay most of our healthcare bills, and in order to do that, they've created a system that determines acceptable prices for different medical procedures. The people that provide insurance companies with the information of what procedures were done to what patients make up a large portion of the clerical staff within a hospital or clinic.

This information exchange is called coding, because the billing systems between medical organizations and insurance companies often involve codes identifying different medical procedures.

This paperwork within a hospital or clinic is pretty complicated, and not everyone can do it. These workers generally are required to hold degrees in medical records, billing and coding, because these systems take awhile to master.

As a medical records, billing, and coding student, you'll probably take some classes in the human anatomy, because you'll have to eventually become familiar with a lot of medical terminology. You'll also learn to use various computer programs that help organize all this paperwork.

If you want to become a medical records, billing, and coding specialist, you can generally find degree programs at various vocational schools. Some schools offer online billing and coding degree programs to those who have to balance school with a full time job.

Request complimentary information from the colleges and universities that interest you. (Programs and degrees vary by school).
