Determining what type of career you want is a big step in your life. This decision will definitely affect where you want to get a degree. To narrow down your choices, you probably want to think about how long you want to be in school. If you would prefer to move into the job market sooner rather than later, you may want to earn an associate's degree at a vocational or technical school. Are you interested in the medical field? If so, you could look into earning a degree as a surgical technician.

Surgical technicians are an essential part of a surgical team that generally includes a surgeon, anesthesiologist, and a registered nurse. A surgical technician, often called a scrub, is in charge of preparing the operating table, sterilizing instruments and the operating room, preparing operating equipment, and assisting the surgeon during an operation.

To become a surgical technician, you'll have to go to surgical technician school. Many different community colleges and vocational schools around the country offer surgical technician programs. Some students can earn a degree as a surgical technician in the military. Attending surgical technician school can take as long as two years, but sometimes only lasts several months. The length of time spent in surgical technician school often varies by the type of degree being sought. If you want to earn a associate's degree as a surgical technician, you will probably need to be in school around two years.
