What Is Automotive Repair?
There are a number of different vehicle systems that are housed within the body frame to protect them as well as providing aerodynamic properties. Some systems are electric, others are mechanical, some are static, some dynamic, and others are controlled by on board computers. Keeping up to date with all these different systems can be quite a challenge, so most repair technicians tend to specialize in certain areas of automotive repair.
What Automotive Repair Programs Are Available?
There are almost as many automotive repair programs as there are models of vehicle! You might be interested in body repair, brakes and suspension, collision repair, service management, motorcycles, diesel engines, steering, or electronic diagnostics, or you may be attracted to automotive repair programs that are specific to a certain manufacture or type of vehicle.
What Subjects Do I Need to Study In School?
Automotive repair is more about practical skills rather than academic achievement, although math and English would be useful. A lot of diagnostic equipment is computer driven, so computer experience is useful. If you want to go into the electrical or mechanical side of repair, then physics may prove useful since an understanding of power, circuitry, torque, motors, and drive are commonly encountered concepts.
What Will I Learn?
Courses vary and what may be relevant to one course will not be included in another. Typical courses may cover automotive mechanics, electrics, electronics, brakes, suspension, wheel balancing and alignment, engine repair, welding, fuel injection, diesel engines, body repair, and frame straightening.
What Type of Entry Level Jobs Are Available?
Even the smallest towns often have a repair shop. You will likely find your first job with a local garage offering body or engine repairs. These garages are usually small outfits employing only a few people. Alternatively, you might be interested in working for a dealership that specializes in one brand of car. If you have chosen to specialize in branded repair then these places are obvious places to look for entry level repair technician roles. If you don't like the idea of working in the same place, you could work for one of the roadside repair or vehicle recovery organizations. You could also become self employed and offer mobile automotive repair services to domestic or commercial customers. Anybody who operates fleets of vehicles such as government, armed forces, haulers, or taxi companies might also be interested in employing an automotive repair technician.
