What Do Automotive Technician s Do?

Automotive technician s are responsible for building, repairing, and servicing vehicles. These vehicles may be domestic station wagons, trucks, tractors, heavy plant, motorcycles, race cars, military, or even marine and pleasure vehicles. Automotive technician s are needed wherever there are vehicles, whether in a small town or a large metropolis that never sleeps.

What Automotive Technician Programs Are Available?

There is something to suit every level of experience and need, whatever you are interested in. Some automotive technician program s specialize in diesel and industrial vehicles, others offer education specific to Ford or Toyota, and there are also options for collision repair, automotive technology, motorcycle technology, and NASCAR. Most program s last about a year, and there are alternatives offering night school and flexi-training (keep in mind that these automotive training program s will take longer to complete). One of the best things about automotive training is that it can be used nationwide and worldwide. What you learn in one state can be used as easily in another or on the other side of the world. The ultimate in transferable skills!

What Subjects Do I Need to Study In School?

Manual dexterity and problem solving are probably more important than academic qualifications. Metalwork or physics might be useful. Clearly, you will need to have a reasonable grasp of English and math, but other than that it is not assumed that you have previous experience or have straight A's.

What Will I Learn?

What you learn is dependant on which automotive technician program s you choose to follow. You might learn about cooling, suspension, electronics, diesel engines, gas engines, suspension, mechanics, fuel systems, and body repair. You might be given instruction on using diagnostic equipment and emissions testing. You may be interested in the management side of automotive technology, making sure that customers receive good service.

What Type of Entry Level Jobs Are Available?

You might get work in a local garage or repair shop as a technician or at a specialist tire and exhaust replacement store. With automotive technician training, you should be able to rise up through the company quite quickly. Work may also be available in collision repair shops, with large vehicle fleet owners, or even military or police corps.

Where Can I Get More Information on Automotive Technician Programs?

Because there are so many different options available, it makes sense to contact several different colleges near you to find out what is required, what they offer, and what you will be qualified to do after the program.
