What is Automotive Training?
Automotive training programs are a mixture of classroom work and practical skills providing you with the training you need to repair, design, or service vehicles. Automotive training programs cover electrical, mechanical, and body repair skills. Some programs are specific to particular brands or types of vehicle, and others are more general.
What Automotive Training Programs Are Available?
There are many different varieties of automotive training programs. The beauty of this type of program is that you can get some basic training and start to earn an income much sooner than you would with a typical four year degree. As and when you are ready, you can go back to college and take further programs to enhance your skills. Most programs provide a certificate at the end. You might opt for an automotive technician course, then go on to specialize. The best way to describe these programs is to liken them to building blocks. Once you have the basic training you can reinforce particular areas. Typical starter programs include automotive technician and mechanic.
What Subjects Do I Need to Study In School?
As long as you have basic competency in math and English there are no real academic requirements. You might find physics useful, but it is not essential since no previous experience is assumed. While there is a certain amount of book work, automotive training programs are more concerned with teaching you practical skills.
What Will I Learn?
You might study the various systems that are used in vehicles such as steering, braking, suspension, cooling, electronics, ignition, and mechanics. There are many diagnostic tools that are used to find faults, and many cars use onboard computers for ignition and timing systems. If these break down they can be difficult to diagnose unless you have been trained to use the right equipment. You might also learn how to perform servicing together with learning about servicing schedules and general maintenance.
What Type of Entry Level Jobs Are Available?
Repair shops and service stations need staff to carry out routine maintenance and repair. You might find work in a tire and exhaust shop to start off, but once you have established your credentials you might be interested in specializing or working on fleet vehicles. Work is available within military, domestic, and commercial settings.
